Cloth diaper review: ImseVimse, GDiaper, Thirsties, Grobaby

As a followup to an earlier post on environmental and cost considerations with diaper systems - here is our current experience.

Our opinion on cloth diapers so far

We went to a cloth diaper workshop at Belly Bliss and ended up more confused by the amount of options out there. In addition to the workshop, our friends had recommended either ImseVisme covers with inserts washed by a Boulder-based diaper service or the gdiaper system, washing the inserts ourselves.

Why we are using cloth diapers

Our motivations for using cloth diapers are primarily cost and to some extent environmental reasons, although it's a little hard to measure the impact of an extra load of laundry a day. Since we're trying to save money, we decided against the laundry service since it ends up being more expensive than disposable diapers.

After about a month of washing our own diapers we've found that it's not too bad. They aren't smelly yet because Lucy is still breast fed (solids or formula make for smellier poop).

What cloth diaper system we recommend

We've tried three different systems so far, and have been happiest with gdiapers. The inserts are microfiber and hemp and a nice small size and the covers are a great fit and velcro in the back. They're really easy to change, especially in the middle of the night when a quick diaper change is ideal. The only negative about the covers are that they're not as waterproof as other systems.

We're also using the thirsties cover over cotton and hemp pre-fold inserts, which also works quite well.

The final system we've tried is the Grobaby option which I thought we would like the best because for $380, you can buy a system that will last from birth through potty-training, plus they're cute. We haven't liked them because they're really bulky for a newborn, the inserts take forever to dry, and nearly every time she poops we have to wash the cover.

Gramma speaking ...Go to Walmart buy the white things called diapers, package of pins, rubber pants and use them (mostly) daughter says their paper diaps are cheap/absorbent. Save Money, Live Better.
